Greta Gerwig is having a moment. And it looks like it's going to last.

The 36-year old impressed critics with her endearing performance as the eponymous Frances in indie-flick-to-know, Frances Ha - while simultaneously working on three writing projects and acting in other movie roles.

Now, she's written the screen play and directed the upcoming Little Women film, starring Emma Watson and Saoirse Ronan, as well as Meryl Streep and Laura Dern.

Though she hates the fact it's so often commented on, Greta thinks the future is getting brighter for women in film - and she's certain that the success of herself and contemporaries like Lena Dunham and Tina Fey sets a bright precedent for the stars of tomorrow.

‘The more it’s talked about, the less it becomes remarkable. And I’m fascinated to see what the [next] generation will become. Girls who are twelve - I’m excited to see what you do when you’re 30!’

She's the girl to namecheck right now, but Greta is still getting the hang of the circus that surrounds Hollywood success. While she's at ease with shoots, combating red carpet nerves is more of a challenge.

'Airbrushing is awesome! Even if you make terrible faces, they'll figure it out. The scary ones are the red carpets because they can't switch out your leg or something!'

To nail red carpet dressing, Greta has worked with stylist, Erin Walsh, who helps her to emulate the looks of her style icons: icons including Anjelica Huston in the seventies, Jane Birkin, and Lauren Hutton.

'When I met Erin I met a collaborator: we have the same idea about what makes women stylish.'

Erin has a stylish roster that also includes Kerry Washington, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Kristen Wiig. Greta's signature look? To be 'effortless - not to look like anyone dressed you.'

All Erin's looks are Greta's 'favourites' but if she had to pick, it would be the 'really simple black Balenciaga dress for the New York premiere of Frances Ha. It was the perfect dress.'

Greta's star is on the meteoric rise, but she still gets starstruck; notably her first day on set with Woody Allen. Luckily her inner 'nerdy fan-girl' didn't stop her from doing her job.

'They're real people and they're doing their lives and it sort of looks like how it is when you’re doing it. And maybe they do it better, but it's still the same.'

But surely even the calmest woman struggles to keep her head when acting alongside notorious lothario Russell Brand?

'He's the most infectious human being! Everyone was in love with him. He’s just one of those people who you want to shine his light on you. And he would just mercilessly make fun of me. I loved it!'

The spotlight is on Greta right now - watch her shine.
