Two winners of the Costa Novel Award will have to make extra room on their shelves – as both are scooping the prestigious prize for the second time. Kate Atkinson, who scooped the Book of the Year award in 2005, this year wins for her story of perpetual resurrection, Life After Life, while Michael Symmons Roberts, who won in 2004, tops the poetry category with Drysalter.

Elsewhere, the beautifully-illustrated Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse by author and political cartoonist Chris Riddell wins the Children’s Book category, and Lucy Hughes-Hallett collects the Biography Award for The Pike. Each wins £5,000, and will now compete for the 2013 Costa Book of the Year, which will be announced in London on Tuesday 28th January.
