All things considered, it wasn’t a great night for British talent at the Emmy Awards. Well known Brits, Damian Lewis, Toby Jones, Benedict Cumberbatch and Maggie Smith left the awards ceremony (held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles) empty handed.
But there was one British win: playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan scooped the award for Best Writing in a Mini-Series or Movie for her work on The Hour.

Morgan accepted the Emmy in a floor length, black sequin gown and joked that now she could prove to the man at US immigration (who didn’t quite believe she was travelling to the Emmys) that she had indeed attended.
Morgan’s win was well deserved, if a little surprising. The BBC drama - starring Dominic West, Romola Garai and Ben Whishaw - was axed in the UK after its second series.
So who is Abi Morgan? She comes from a theatrical family (the daughter of an actress and theatre director) and now in her 40s, has been working since 1998. Her name may not immediately set bells ringing but you’re bound to be familiar with her impressive body of work.
Morgan’s previous writing credits include a Magaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady starring Meryl Streep and TV film Birdsong starring Eddie Redmayne and Clémence Poésy. But ELLE’s favourite has to be Shame, the grueling but oh-so compelling story of a man’s struggle with sex addiction, starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. Add all three to your must-watch/must-rewatch list immediately.
