An ELLE cover star, the sister of some very fashion twins, two Brits and one man...
Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Olsen, Andrea Riseborough, Juno Temple and Sunraj Sharma – star of Life of Pi – are the 5 young talents in the running to receive the BAFTA Rising Star Award 2013.
The shortlist was made by a panel of industry insiders including Benedict Cumberbatch.
The award is unique in that’s it’s the only one voted for by the public. Previous winners include Kristen Stewart, James McAvoy, Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf.
Before you place your bets, read more about each of the nominees.
Elizabeth Olsen
With two highly acclaimed performances in 2012 - Martha Marcy May Marlene and Silent House - this was always going to be Elizabeth Olsen’s year. She charmed Sundance and now she’s set to take Hollywood with a recently completed production Oldboy (directed by Spike Lee) and a role in Red Lights opposite Robert DeNiro.
Andrea Riseborough
With roles in Brighton Rock, Happy Go Lucky and W.E to her name, Riseborough seems to be beyond Rising Star but this nomination is deserved recognition for an astonishingly varied career for a young actress…so far.
Suraj Sharma
19 year old Suraj Sharma is the only male nominee for the EE Rising Star Award. He won the eponymous role in The Life of Pi with no previous acting experience and spends much of the film acting alongside a CGI tiger which surely earns him extra brownie points with the judges.
Juno Temple
Breakthrough roles opposite to Cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal and Keira Knightley and James McAvoy in the Oscar-winning Atonement helped to establish British actress Juno Temple’s Hollywood credentials but it was her role as Dottie in 2012’s Killer Joe that helped her to graduate into the role of fully fledged movie star. With a litany of films out this year, this will be Temple’s year,
Alicia Vikander
After winning critical acclaim for her role in Danish film A Royal Affair, Vikander landed the role of Kitty’s in Joe Wright’s adaptation of Anna Karenina bringing her to Hollywood’s attention. The Swedish actress was also the cover star on our Style for Less supplement last year so she has the fashion vote too.
