The latest supermodel to catch the marathon bug is Christy Turlington. Following in the footsteps of Agyness Deyn, Natalia Vodianova and Veronica Webb, she’s planning to compete in the New York City Marathon on November 6.
Turlington is pinning on a number in support of Every Mother Counts, the charity she founded to improve maternal and child health. Though she’s better known for her yoga habit, Turlington told WWD that she has always dabbled in running. Until recently, six miles had been her top mileage.
The supermodel has found that despite the difficult training, marathon prep does have its advantages. First to consider is the $70,000 she’s raised (so far!) from sponsors including Maybelline New York and Roberto Coin. Second, the carbs.
‘One thing you have to do is carb-loading,’ she told the paper. That is something I had always heard about but never really knew what it involved. It’s kind of nice to say you have to eat carbs. That’s my job right now.’
Models Webb and Anne Vyalitsyna are NYCM alumni, while Deyn tackled the Virgin London Marathon (alongside David Gandy and Henry Holland) in aid of Oxfam in April 2011. Vodianova ran the Paris Half Marathon to support her Naked Heart Foundation in March.
Charitable, yes, but now we know the secret—they’re in it for the carbs.
