Rumours of Naomi Campbell’s engagement have been circulating for years. (We reported on whispers that the supermodel planned to marry boyfriend Vladislav Doronin at the Temple of Luxor last November.)
Clearly, Campbell has spent the past several months attending weddings , not starring in them. Despite all the false alarms, it seems there’s more fodder to this fire. Modelinia reported that Campbell and her (erm, still married) Russian boyfriend set off about $82,000 worth of fireworks during a Crete holiday to celebrate ‘their little secret’. Apparently, Campbell is rocking a serious diamond ring, and she hinted at an engagement.
Past evidence makes us sceptical, but we’ll run with it, because there’s ANOTHER rumour: that Campbell is pregnant . No idea where that one came from, but pregnancy certainly sounds like a fireworkable ‘little secret’ to us... So in a spot of Friday-afternoon aimlessness, we Googled ‘fashion baby names’ to see if we could find any recommendations for the high-fashion could-be mama.
We had no idea that we were tapping into a rich subgenre of baby-name lists. A list called ‘Designer Baby Names: Fashion Forward Names for Your Child’ on Nameberry suggests calling your infant Armani, Chanel, Sisley, Hardy (as in Ed) or Levi. Babycenter.com assembled a digest of fashion designers’ first names. Do we hear the patter of little Jil/Miuccia/Yohji/Junyas?
Our pick of the bunch has to be ‘Names from Fashion’ on Babynames.com. These are words drawn from patterns, fabrics, colours, furniture and fashion design that could be repurposed as names. At a stretch.
Some are lovely: we would like Isabelline if it didn’t mean ‘a grey shade of yellow’, and Jacinthe is sweet too. ‘Ondelette’ sounds much prettier than its meaning: CF Rayon with tangled slubs. Organza, Rayon, Toile, Gauge and Chevron are clearly not even options.
But for Campbell, it’s got to be a ‘C’ name. Chambray... Challis... Crystal... Nope, we’ve got it. Chenille Campbell, welcome to our world. We know it’s a fictional world, but we’re very glad to have you here.
