The 57th BFI Film Festival kicks off this week and ELLE can’t wait to soak up some culture, spot some stars, and see what London’s movie-buffs are wearing on the South Bank.

So what are we looking forward to seeing?

We can’t wait for our Man of the Week Joseph Gordon Levitt’s Don Jon, the story of a young man addicted to porn, also starring Scarlett Johansson.

Two Tom Hanks films open and close the festival: Captain Phillips tells the true story of a ship hijacked by Somalian pirates; and Saving Mr Banks, about Walt Disney’s pursuit of the filming rights to Mary Poppins, co-starring Brit treasure Emma Thompson.

Gravity, the suspenseful space drama with Hollywood veterans Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, is getting rave reviews.

Directed by the Coen brothers, Inside Llewyn Davis, about a struggling musician trying to succeed in the 1961 Greenwich Village folk scene, stars Carey Mulligan with a soundtrack by her husband’s band Mumford and Sons.

Blue is the Warmest Colour, about an intense romance between two young women stars Lea Seydoux and is one of the most eagerly anticipated, and controversial, films of the festival.

For cult-film lovers, Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton star as a pair of ancient vampire lovers in Only Lovers Left Alive while Scarlett Johansson roams Scotland preying upon unsuspecting men in Under the Skin.

It mightn’t be as glitzy as Cannes but as the line-up proves, London always wins in the cool stakes.

LFF runs from 9-20 October. For more information and to book tickets visit bfi.org.uk/lff
