Emma Healey’s precisely plotted, moving mystery Elizabeth Is Missing was the focus of last night’s ELLE Book Club event.

Guests were gathered in the Hoxton Hotel’s twinkling courtyard (with a glass of Baileys in one hand and a canapé in the other) to listen to Emma read extracts from the book and discuss her inspiration (both her grandmothers).

Emma also described her experience as a first time, bestselling author. It's been good - publishers tried to woo her with gifts, including more tins of peaches than she knows what to do with (if that seems bizarre, we promise you'll get it once you've read the book).

Plus, Emma revealed that the TV rights for this, her debut novel have already been sold and she’s started plotting a second book.

Novel number two is likely to feature another exploration of mother-daughter relationships. Emma talked of her ongoing fascination with memory and how storytelling within families can distort your personal history.
