Awards season is here and as well as the red carpet moments and gushing 'thank you' speeches, the thing we've been looking forward to most is the return of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as hosts at the Golden Globes.

Last year, the duo nailed it, with just the right mix of comedy and controversy.

So much so that they were quickly snapped up for two more years of hosting duties.

As Tina Fey puts it to ELLE, Sunday's show is 'the second in the trilogy.'

We caught up with the Mean Girls and 30 Rock creator and all round comedy genius to see how plans are going for the big night.

Have you swotted up on all the nominated films?

I'm working on it. It’s such a pleasurable task. I just watched – ooh, try to write a joke about that! Will we? It remains to be seen.

Do you enjoy awards season?

I find it very fun. I’m a person who never should have been on a red carpet. There’s no explicable reason as to why I’m on as many red carpets as I am. So for me, I embrace the fun of it. I have so much admiration for the designers who build those dresses. That’s for the first 40 minutes and then I immediately want to take it off and go to bed.

Does having Amy at your side ease the nerves?

Absolutely. I predict that we will be a little more nervous this year. Last year we didn’t have anything to lose – and we still don’t really – but it went pretty well so we have to live up to that.

Is the script ready?

It’s all so last minute. I used to stay up all night writing for Saturday Night Live but now my brain only really works in the early morning. So I’ll get up at 4 in the morning and think about 12 Years A Slave. And hope something hilarious comes to me.

3 of our favourite Tina and Amy jokes from the 2013 Golden Globes:

'Anne Hathaway, you gave a stunning performance in Les Misérables. I have not seen someone so totally alone and abandoned like that since you were on stage with James Franco at the Oscars.'

'Meryl Streep is not here tonight. She has the flu—and I hear she's amazing in it.'

'Kathryn Bigelow's nominated tonight. I haven't really been following the controversy over Zero Dark Thirty, but when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.'
