ELLE caught up with the Bling Ring director in Cannes...

Why did you choose Emma Watson for this film?

When I met her I was impressed and thought she had a smart approach to the character. It's interesting to see an actor transform.

The visual style of the film is very distinctive...

I wanted to make the style of the movie fit the story - glitzy and obnoxious and fast paced and loud.

Do you think there's a dark side to all your films?

I hope there is. Life would be boring if there was no dark side.

Why are women still a minority in the film industry?

I think there more and more women making films and going to film school and I'm glad.

The Bling Ring is in cinemas 5 July
