US singer and former Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed, died on Sunday aged 71.

Widely considered to be one of the most influential songwriters in rock, his most popular hits included Perfect Day and Walk on the Wild Side.

But Reed’s influence reaches far beyond commercial success.

Fellow musician Brian Eno once said - ‘The first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but everyone who bought it formed a band.’

Further praise came yesterday from another rock legend David Bowie who said of his friend and contemporary, 'He was a master.'

Reed’s music certainly provided the soundtrack for many of team ELLE’s moments of teenage angst and creative awakening.
