Danny Boyle’s new film, Trance is a gripping psychological thriller starring Rosario Dawson as smart, successful hypnotist Elizabeth.

She’s called in to help art auctioneer Simon (James McAvoy) with an unusual problem: he’s the only one who knows where a stolen Goya painting is, but he’s forgotten where.

Bit of a problem when a dangerous criminal, Vincent Cassel’s Franck, won’t rest until he finds it.

Cue faintly amusing scenario of professional hypnotist working with dodgy gangsters and a bewildered James McAvoy in the middle of it all.

It’s a slick, intriguing feature that moves into trippier territory as Elizabeth tries every trick in her book to get the truth out of Simon.

The boundaries between fantasy and reality are blurred and we’re left with a series of puzzles to solve.

Even long after the credits role, Trance is a real head-spinner: perfect for post-cinema pub chat.
