Emma Watson stars in Sofia Coppola’s designer robbery saga The Bling Ring premiering in Cannes tonight

There are so many fascinating things about The Bling Ring.

It’s a Sofia Coppola film, it’s Emma Watson’s next big American movie, and it’s based on the staggering story of Hollywood college kids who casually Googled holidaying celebrities and stormed their houses, loading up on shoes and jewels.

They were, of course, brought to justice but this revels in their carefree, careless partying – the pride before the fall.

Emma plays the flighty Nicki, lover of late nights and short skirts, while an impressive cast of relative newcomers are her rebellious partners in crime.

Like many of Coppola’s films, the story doesn’t follow a traditional narrative arc – it’s stuck on an addictive loop, just like its protagonists.

As they raid the homes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom and more, we’re invited to join their voyeurism, excitedly scanning shelves of Laboutins.

The story lags in places but The Bling Ring is a stylish, entertaining look at consumerism and celebrity.

The Bling Ring is out July 5th and opens the Un Certain Regard section in Cannes on Thursday 16 May
