We’ve always loved seeing Nicole Kidman in quirky, sexy roles and The Paperboy is no exception.

A lurid drama/thriller from Precious director Lee Daniels, it sees Kidman’s trashy 60s Southern belle Charlotte sexually obsessed with a convict (John Cusack), convinced she can free him with the help of journalist Ward (Matthew McConaughey).

Ward’s brother Jack (Efron) is assigned to be her driver and soon develops a fixation of his own.

It’s a muddled but entertaining look at erotic obsession, justice and a lot more besides, with Kidman on fine form in an array of figure-hugging sixties dresses, all pastel pout and Bardot hair.

Meanwhile 25-year-old Efron looks every inch the golden era movie star.

It’s not always easy to know how seriously The Paperboy is taking itself but either way it’s a stylish, enjoyable and darkly funny watch with a couple of stand-out scenes that will leave you slack-jawed.

The Paperboy is in cinemas 15 March
