No one is better equipped to say this than the ever-fabulous Joan Collins.
Coming of age in a decade where hair, heels, shoulders and sartorial expectations were high, Collins was an 80s pin-up of epic proportions. Born in 1933 in London, Joan Henrietta Collins was such a beautiful baby that her mother apparently hung a sign on her stroller telling cooing onlookers, 'Do Not Kiss'.
Decamping to Hollywood in the 50s with dreams of becoming a star, Collins first film role was as an uncredited beauty pageant contestant in the 1951 movie Lady Godiva Rides Again. In 1981, Collins landed the role that shaped her career: the unapologetically vengeful Alexis Carrington Colby, in the cult US series Dynasty.
Nominated six times for a Golden Globe - finally winning one in 1983 - Collins also received an Emmy nod for her performance on the show.
In 1997, Queen Elizabeth II awarded Collins the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to the arts and charity.
After more than a half-century in show business and with a personal life sometimes as dramatic as her Dynasty scripts, including five turbulent marriages - Joan Collins continues to entertain us from her personal blog and Twitter account, @joancollinsobe.
