In this week’s episode, we get a long-awaited peek into the elusive Adam’s life when his sister, Caroline (Gaby Hoffman), arrives. The relationship Adam has with his sister is clearly a strained one – apparently she tried to euthanise their grandmother – but as usual, Hannah is oblivious and wants to do right by the unexpected guest, so invites her to her upcoming 25th birthday party. Adam = not impressed.

Marnie is still in the depths of break-up misery, not helped by Charlie uploading an embarrassing ‘music’ video of her on YouTube. We feel her pain, but we wish this particular sub-plot had been left out in lieu of more Jessa time, which is severely lacking in this episode. Hopefully she’ll feature more next week.

Also in break-up land, Ray’s valiant attempt at small talk with Shoshanna before announcing that he doesn’t want to be friends is refreshing, and alas, not common enough in real life. But if he was hoping dear Shosh would give him some hint of despair at their break-up, he was very much mistaken.

Finally, while we know that Girls likes to make us uncomfortable – and we’re not entirely opposed to this – the last scene of this week’s episode hit hard. Hannah and Adam arrive home, intertwined as they walk into their flat, then Hannah excuses herself to the bathroom. Cue Caroline behind the door, naked from the waist down – sporting an impressive bush – and holding a glass, which she then crushes. Now, we have no problem with her pubic topiary choices (have you read our February issue piece on pubic hair?), but her self-destructive act was a distressing way to end the episode. It does, however, mean that we can’t wait for next week, to see how/if this gets resolved.
