Onstage, it was all about the legs. Noisettes frontwoman Shingai Shoniwa wore a leopard-print Dolce & Gabbana body with an improvised chiffon train, Beyonce sparkled in black hotpants, and Jessie J held court in her trademark bodysuit.

And the crowd fashion? For the first day, it was all about coping with the rain, with festival-goers concealing their best-laid outfit plans under rain-beating Barbour and Hogan macs. Wellies were so ubiquitous as to seem standard-issue. The mud acted as a great leveller, with Barbour, Superga, Hunter, Dunlop and unbranded versions quickly becoming impossible to differentiate as they picked up layers of sludge.

By the time the sun came out, all the girls in attendance were ready to show some skin. Hotpants (see Tali Lennox, Sara Bolmqvist, Lily Donaldson), fringed vests and seventies-inspired maxis—some chopped into midis for a more festival-friendly length—ruled from the Pyramid Stage to Avalon. Headgear was a big story, with floral garlands, feathered headdresses and battered straw cowboy hats topping off weather-befuddled looks.
