Hip hop star Kanye West last night called Lindsay Lohan's Ungaro collection for s/s 2010, the '9/11 for celebrities doing fashion. After that, I thought, "Well I can't do a line now".'
He was speaking at the London premiere of the short film, Runaway, that accompanies new record ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’. Directed by West, it stars newcomer Selita Ebanks as a feathered- phoenix fallen to earth. And it has a high fashion slant thanks to the costume designer – ELLE favourite Phillip Lim.
Last night West discussed meeting Karl Lagerfeld in the Chanel atelier, Paris. After seeing the devotion of Lagerfeld's seamstresses to their craft, West was inspired to return to making music after taking a hiatus of six months following last year's MTV VMA stage invasion on Taylor Swift.
'These women would die for Karl, they were so into perfecting that next Chanel dress, which no one else could make.'
West spoke for just under two hours until 1am, citing Alexander McQueen as one of his biggest inspirations. 'I was so hurt that I could never see his shows up close, but it was amazing to see his vision brought to life in his last collection.'
The Diamonds are Forever rapper believes the critical flop of Lohan's move into advising for Ungaro has forced the public to be sceptical of musicians succeeding in fashion. 'Last night at my Paris premiere of Runaway, what hurt most was the people who weren't there. People look down on celebs doing fashion.'
When asked how his long-rumoured own clothing range Pastelle was going, West repeated the Lohan jibe, 'Did you not see the Lindsay/Ungaro collection?'
'There are so many ups and downs, hurts and pains in fashion. It's extremely frustrating, because I do have opinions on colour palettes and fabrics, but do I have the time to pick out every belt buckle?
'I don't have 20 years of fashion experience, and my father wasn't a tailor able to train me. The only way it would work was if I sat next to a designer.'
