So it’s with no small degree of disbelief and personal betrayal that those same fans are receiving the news that Stewart apparently cheated on boyfriend Robert Pattinson with Rupert Sanders, her Snow White and the Huntsman director.
Here’s what we know: US gossip magazine Us Weekly published a small picture of Sanders embracing Stewart on the cover of their latest issue. Sanders is married and has two children with model Liberty Ross, who—and this hurts—played Stewart’s mother in SWATH.
But the story only picked up traction when Stewart issued a public apology to People magazine, via a representative, on Wednesday afternoon:
'I'm deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry.'
Sanders chimed in with his own statement:
'I am utterly distraught about the pain I have caused my family. My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world. I love them with all my heart. I am praying that we can get through this together.'
When we met Sanders and Stewart at a SWATH press conference, Sanders was openly adoring of Stewart, but we thought his admiration was that of a director for his star. In retrospect, his quotes can read borderline steamy, as when he praised Stewart's 'very rebellious kind of spirit': 'She's a bit like a wild horse—she’s hard to hold down,' Sanders said. 'I liked that.'
So far, so silent from Pattinson. Ross has deleted her Twitter account.
