The colours and camellias at the waistband on Michelle Williams ’s gown shouted ‘Chanel !’, while Theron chose an Azzedine Alaia dress with a tiered skirt. Kruger opted for a pleated halter-neck from Prada’s spring-summer 2012 collection (we hope she arrived in a classic hot rod to match Miuccia’s vision).
Adding to the designer roll call were Kirsten Dunst in Christian Dior and Evan Rachel Wood in Valentino . Elle Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen wore two of the most colourful ensembles of the night. Fanning chose a sunflower-strewn Rodarte gown and Olsen wore a lemon-yellow Emilio Pucci cocktail dress.
Emma Stone, who won an award for Best Acting Ensemble with the rest of the cast for The Help, wore an emerald-green gown by Jason Wu . Costar Jessica Chastain chose candy-pink Balenciaga .
The Artist, Michael Hazanavicius’s black-and-white silent film, won the evening’s top honours. Along with Best Picture, it won Best Score, Best Costume Design and Best Director. Best Actress went to The Help star Viola Davis.
