The Queen of Pop stepped off her palanquin to power through a 12-minute medley of some of her greatest hits, including “Vogue”, “Music”, “Like a Prayer” and a new track, “Give Me All Your Luvin’”.
Helping her along were a number of other chart toppers. LMFAO mixed their "Body Rock" with Madonna’s "Music", Nicki Minaj and MIA joined Madonna as cheerleaders during "Luvin’", and Cee-lo Green dared to go sequin for sequin with a legend for a "Like a Prayer" duet. Excuse us if we barely noticed MIA raise her middle finger to tens of millions of viewers—we were too awed by the spectacle of it all.
And what did Madonna wear? A lot of gold. We can't have been alone in detecting more than a smidgen of vintage Versace iconography, but it was Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci behind ‘all costumes’ worn by Madonna during the big show. He created the gold cape and gladiator overskirt for the entrance to "Vogue", the black silk dress showed to best effect during the cheerleading sequence and the sequinned choir robe Madonna wore for "Like a Prayer".
'Following my collaboration with Madonna on her last tour three years ago, it is a great honor for me to be a part of yet another historical and iconic moment,' Tisci said in a release. 'People say everything has a limit, but limits do not exist with Madonna.'
Philip Treacy created the custom-designed gold Cleopatra crown. The earrings—all 19.6 carats—apparently belonged to fellow Cleopatra personifier Elizabeth Taylor . Dancers wore Jeremy Scott for Adidas trackstuits, and Erickson Beamon supplied Minaj and MIA’s headpieces.
Twitter went wild. Side administrators reported that Madonna’s performance elicited 8,000 tweets per second for five minutes straight, with some famous names weighing in.
Eva Longoria: ‘Madonna is amazing!!! Love her always! What a performer! All my fav songs!’
30 Rock star Alec Baldwin: ‘Two quarters of SuperBowl and the strongest performer is Madonna... You gotta hand it to Madonna. No apologies’
Snoop Dogg:‘Madonna killen the superbowl her show is soo fresh. Wowoowowowowowoowowowowowow!’
Bryanboy: ‘omg. Madonna in Givenchy for Super Bowl. I'm having Cher/Bob Mackie flashbacks. #nuffsaid’
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs: ‘Madonna had the best Half-time performance of all time !! Everyone on that stage killed it! @nickiminaj @MIAuniverse @CeeLo’
And Nick Grimshaw , in a moment of snark about the ‘World Peace’ graphic that played across the stage after the final number, offered this: ‘Ever since Madonna mentioned world peace I'm kind of into the idea’
With entertainment like this, we have to wonder: what football?
