But on Friday night in Los Angeles, to celebrate the launch of her Marni for H&M collection (debuting March 8 globally), Consuelo Castiglioni joined Sofia Coppola and H&M’s creative adviser Margareta Van Den Bosch in welcoming about 200 guests, including Drew Barrymore, Winona Ryder, Milla Jovovich, Lily Collins and Freida Pinto to an intimate dinner party at the iconic Sowden House that perfectly married Italian elegance with West Coast flair.
'I love Marni and have been wearing Marni forever, so this collection couldn’t be more awesome,' said Barrymore. 'Marni at prices everyone can afford. What’s not to love?' added Collins, who no doubt was speaking for her entire generation of fashion savvy shoppers.
Every arm of the multi-faceted sensory experience was quirky and cool—down to the party location itself, in the eccentric Los Feliz neighbourhood. 'I wanted everything—the location and the atmosphere—to be an extension of the Marni brand,' said Castiglioni as she took a break from the red carpet to have a bite of the delicious European-meets-farm-fresh-Californian cuisine served buffet style in the kitchen. Indeed, the party setting melded perfectly with the Bauhaus modernity of the designs.
After ascending a grand staircase surrounded by oversized hurricane candles, partygoers indulged in an atmosphere that included hundreds of votives, oversized lounge seating (complete with cashmere blankets to fight the night’s chill) while others eagerly ensconced themselves in a special back room that had been converted into a Marni for H&M closet oohing and aahing over the clothes and accessories. Coppola, for her part stunning in a head-to-toe Marni for H&M outfit, was thrilled with the results. 'We shot the commercial [I directed] for this campaign in Marrakech, and I feel like I’m back there tonight!'
Topping off the night was a performance by the incomparable Bryan Ferry, who, clad in his signature black suit, sang a bevy of his greatest hits, including 'Slave to Love.' Those expecting to see him in a Marni for H&M shirt will have to wait just a little longer. 'I wear my Marni in private,' he joked.
