Angelina Jolie caused a stir on the world’s most glamorous red carpet in a daring split-to-the-thigh black velvet gown by Atelier Versace, while Gwyneth Paltrow wore a demure dress from Tom Ford’s top-secret autumn winter 12 collection.
The Oscars are of course the biggest night in the Hollywood calendar, so only the hottest dresses will do. Cameron Diaz sizzled in a strapless cream Gucci gown with a gentled ruffled train, while Jessica Chastain wore an opulent black and gold creation by Alexander McQueen. Chastain is a self confessed fan of the designer and also wore Alexander McQueen to the ELLE Style Awards earlier this month.
Rooney Mara kept her gown choice pure and simple in an elegant white Givenchy floor sweeping dress with lattice back detail, a testament to Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci who created his spring summer 12 couture collection in the image of the actress.
Outside of the monochrome and romantic champagne palette, some stars opted to wear brightly coloured dresses on the red carpet.
Emma Stone wore a deep-pink Giambattista Valli dress with a huge, flourishing corsage at the neck – as predicted by ELLE. While ELLE cover star Michelle Williams wore a tiered coral dress by Louis Vuitton.
