ELLE campaigned for a Time Lady to step into the shoes vacated by Matt Smith – but yesterday, Peter Capaldi was named as the 12th Dr Who.

As far as male doctors go, we couldn’t have picked anyone better.

So popular was Capaldi – better known to many as his sweary alter ego Malcolm Tucker in The Thick Of It – as top choice for the role that betting on him was suspended ahead of yesterday’s big reveal live on BBC One.

‘Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege,’ said Capaldi. ‘Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can't wait to get started.’

Filming will commence this autumn.

It’s been a long time coming for the 55-year-old actor and Doctor Who super-fan who, it was revealed, wrote to the Radio Times when he was 15 in 1973 to thank them for a special edition celebrating ten years of ‘wandering in time with the Doctor’.

Which got us to thinking… What if the letters we wrote as kids were to mystically come back to us as adults? Here’s what we’d be dealing with:

Collette Lyons, Content Director

‘I was deeply in love with Chesney Hawkes. I had a tape and a poster and knew all the words to the whole album (yes, there was a whole album). And I seem to remember that I did the postal equivalent of spamming with fan mail, telling him he was my One and Only.’

Sue Ward Davies, Travel & Lifestyle Director

‘My friend and I wrote to Top of the Pops to ask if we could audition as dancers when we were 12. We didn't hear back. We were gutted as, of course, we told the whole school we were practicing routines for TOTP.’

Sophie Beresiner, Beauty Director

‘I wrote to Jim'll Fix It because I always envied the big present at the end of the episode. I cleverly asked for a life-changing tour of the Sylvanian Family Factory – thinking I'd at least get one of everything as a surprise at the end. Never heard back… (Thank God).’

Fern Ross, Chief Sub-Editor and Production Director

‘I wrote to Blue Peter, aged nine, about the dangers of global warming (and to get information on hedgehogs for a school project). I got a Blue Peter badge – I was so pleased with myself!’

Emma Sells, Fashion Features Writer

‘I couldn’t for the life of me tell you why but I wrote a letter to the Queen inviting her over for fish and chips. I got a lovely letter back from her office politely declining.’

Lucy Johnston, Picture Assistant

‘In homage to my green haired hero, I drew a (rather excellent if I do say so myself) depiction of Ed the Duck for the Broom cupboard. It never did get shown by Andi Peters (or Toby Anstis) on TV but I just knew it was because it was too ahead of its time…’

Gillian Brett, PA to the Editor and Editorial Assistant

‘I used to make a beeline for the 'embarrassing stories' in Mizz. I'd spend hours conjuring up embarrassing situations to submit. One out of about 100 was printed and I proudly stuck it up on my bedroom wall. I class it as my first ever byline.’
