The first child born to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be known as… His or Her Royal Highness the Prince or Princess of Cambridge.

Buckingham Palace has today confirmed the official title of the royal baby, which is now believed to be due on Saturday, 13 July. It’s understood that even new parents-to-be don’t know whether they’re having a boy or a girl.

Either way, the child will be the first to hold the title.

According to former Cambridge mayor Cllr Sheila Stewart, who met Kate on the royal visit to the city last year, having a prince or princess is a first for the city.

'When we did a lot of research after it was first announced that the couple were to get the title, nothing like that was found,’ she said, speaking in the press today. ‘There were some dukes of Cambridge but not a prince or princess.

'It can only be good news for Cambridge. Everyone is so excited about it. The whole country is waiting for the birth.'

And while we do, there's yet more cause for celebration: it's been announced today that Zara Phillips is expecting her first child with her rugby star husband Mike Tindall. So we can already start looking forward to royal baby #2.
