Informed rumour has it that the Somewhere director will wear a gown designed by Azzedine Alaïa . The whispers started when Coppola and daughter Romy, her child with Mars, attended Alaïa’s show during couture week in early July. ‘Azzedine Alaïa all but confirmed as designer of Sofia Coppola's wedding dress 4 her nuptials 2 Phoenix singer Thomas Mars this summer! #pfw’ journo Jim Shi tweeted.
Choosing Alaia as her gown designer marks a break with some pretty high-profile fashion affiliations. For starters, Coppola is a long-time friend of Marc Jacobs . He chose her as the face of his label’s first fragrance, then brought her into Louis Vuitton for a handbag collection . Coppola recently progressed from that role to collaborating on the Resort 2012 collection with Jacobs’ studio design director.
Besides Vuitton, there’s the matter of Dior. John Galliano designed Coppola’s gown for her first wedding, to filmmaker Spike Jonze, and Coppola’s affinity for the house made her a natural choice to direct Miss Dior Cherie adverts .
Fact is, Coppola is too important to Jacobs , Vuitton and Dior for any unpleasantness to arise over her very personal choice of a gown. And truly, every part of this wedding sounds exceptionally personal: Bernalda, a village in the instep of the Italian boot, was Coppola’s great-grandparents’ hometown. The ceremony will be conducted in the garden of Palazzo Margherita, an important building recently restored by Francis Ford Coppola. On the day of the wedding, a Coppola relative plans to project scenes from both Francis Ford and Sofia’s films onto the facades of about 10 village buildings.
Clearly, the villagers are making ample preparations for the nuptials of their most famous daughter. Another perk to holding a wedding in a town with plenty of family connections? Outsiders—and uninvited photographers—stand out. We won’t hold our breath for gown photos, but we’ll remain hopeful that we’ll get a glimpse sometime soon. Say, around November, in a major fashion magazine.
