On Saturday at Cowdray Park Polo Club in Sussex, England beat the USA at the 5th annual St. Regis International Cup. Edie Campbell, Otis Ferry, Jodie Kidd, Hannah Murray, Rosamund Pike, Joely Richardson and David Gandy all gathered in the St. Regis VIP marquee to sample the famous Bloody Marys and cheer on the England team as they secured their victory (albeit by just half a point).
Rosamund Pike chose a topical Mary Katrantzou dress for the occasion. ‘My dress has horses on it, which I thought was maybe an amusing detail,' she told us, 'but then I realised the placement also gives men an excuse to look at my breasts, so I’m not really pointing that out.’
Then there was David Gandy, who shared a hair-raising story about riding in Yosemite National Park. ‘It was very mountainous and my horse took off, I had no control over it whatsoever and you’re never quite sure where the edge of the mountain is, so you’re just thinking, oh God horse, please know where you’re going.’ Fortunately for Gandy, and the fashion industry, the horse didn’t lead him off a precipice.
On the way back from treading the divots (stomping around to try and restore the surface of the pitch at half time), we spotted model Edie Campbell gleaming in gold Miu Miu sunglasses, sipping champagne and settling down to watch the game with Otis Ferry.
Campbell may be an excellent rider but she’s new to polo. ‘I like the speed of it and that you have to be a really good sportsman as well as a rider’ she offered. Ferry chipped in to assure us that Campbell will be taking up polo so they can play together. Now that’s another match we’d like to see.
