From the opening gala through the final yacht party, Cannes has come to stand for 12 days of stars swanning about in clouds of chiffon, champagne and ambition.
The big show began yesterday, with the screening of Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson’s latest. The first film in competition for the coveted Palme d’Or, it stars Edward Norton, Bruce Willis and Tilda Swinton as New England villagers searching for young runaways.
But the real story was on the red carpet—Eva Longoria swept in wearing a dramatic Marchesa gown, jury member Diane Kruger wore a Grecian green Giambattista Valli Couture gown, and Berenice Bejo chose Louis Vuitton.
Other notable premieres include Lawless, a bootlegging film starring Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce and Mia Wasikowska; On the Road with Kristen Stewart, and Cosmopolis, starring Robert Pattinson.
Chopard leads off the party programme tonight. The jeweller will bestow its trophy on two rising actors (take it from us—Chopard chose well) before celebrating the awards with a party on Friday night. Harvey Weinstein is throwing a bash, PDiddy is taking to the water for his annual Cannes yacht party, and Gucci will fete its restoration of Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America with a major event on Saturday night.
The after-hours social scene reaches its culmination in the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala. Last year, Gwen Stefani, Naomi Campbell, Uma Thurman and Kanye West wore their couture best to the annual fundraising event. This time around, Carine Roitfeld is staging an all-black, all designer fashion show. It’s happening at the Hotel du Cap Eden Roc, where Karl Lagerfeld staged Chanel's 2012 Cruise show, on 24 May.
We can’t wait. Cannes you?
