The trailer for The Fifth Estate, the story of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, has been released.

Fresh from the set of Star Trek, British darling Benedict Cumberbatch plays the young, blonde-haired protagonist. He stars alongside Daniel Bruhl as former Wikileaks spokesman, and friend-then-foe, Daniel Domscheit-Berg. The trailer gives a sneak peak into the pair’s troubled relationship which, according to director Bill Condon, is 'the crux of the movie'.

After reading an early script, Assange described The Fifth Estate as a 'massive propaganda attack on WikiLeaks and the character of my staff'.

Yet the first look would suggest a fairer portrayal, oscillating between praise and condemnation of the Australian journalist.

The film also stars Alicia Vikander, ELLE supplement cover girl and last year’s winner of the Editor’s Choice at the ELLE Style Awards, as well as Laura Linney and Stanley Tucci.

The film has been adapted by The West Wing’s Josh Singer from two books: Inside WikiLeaks, Domscheit-Berg's first-person account of his experience working with Assange, and The Guardian’s WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy.

With comparisons to The Social Network abound, the hotly anticipated film will be released in the UK in January.

Assange: visionary or villain? By the looks of it, the film lets you decide.
