Ah, the workplace. Sometimes fraught with disappointment and difficulties but also an arena in which our greatest ambitions can be realised and mammoth challenges overcome.
A new UK study, project2840.com, is investigating women’s experiences in the workplace in a bid to understand how things can be improved and achievement driven forward.
Helena Morrissey, CEO of Newton Investment, is the influential figure behind this new survey and the 30% club, which promotes diversity in the workplace, particularly at board level. The focus of the study will be on women aged 28-40, since this is a critical phase for career development.
The aim of the survey is to identify specific issues regarding women in the workplace that still need to be addressed. There are already some glaringly obvious ones, like the gender pay gap (we don’t need a survey to tell us this is a massive problem). In fact, the gap is so large that as of 7 November women have effectively been working for free (and will continue to do so until the year is out). Utterly depressing.
But some issues are trickier to identify. At ELLE’s feminism debate on Monday Laura Jordan Bambach, President of D&AD explained, ‘Often hugely talented women aren’t given a platform. We’re conditioned not to feel as happy with our work as men.’
ELLE editor in chief Lorraine Candy agreed: ‘Women need to stop being apologetic about money and their skill set.’

At some point in a woman’s life she’s likely to spend most of her waking hours at work. The confidential survey takes 15 minutes to complete. We suggest you give it a go.
