The Golden Globes: No red carpet for last night's winners

Marion Cotillard, winner Best Actress Golden Globe

As we reported last week, due to the Writers Guild of America strike in Hollywood this year the Golden Globes were reduced to a press conference last night, denying us all - including Hollyood's most fashion savvy starlets - of the usual red carpet fashion parade.

Most stars stayed away from the entire night, opting to watch the live press conference announcing this year's winners from hotel rooms, resturants and homes around the country - while some declined to acknowledge the night all together.

Julian Schnable, winner of Best Director for his french language film, The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, found out he had won while waiting for his suitcases at the baggage carousel at New York's JFK Airport. While James McAvoy, (nominated for Best Actor in a drama for Atonement but not a winner) his wife Anne Marie Duff and Anna Friel, who currently stars in the Golden Globe nominated US Drama Pushing Daisies shunned the Globes for a BAFTA tea party held at The Beverly Hills Hotel.

Winner's last night included Marion Cotillard (pictured) for her performance in the musical film La Vie En Rose - about the life of Edith Piaff; Cate Blanchett for her role in the Bob Dylan biopic, I'm Not There (in which she played Bob!) and veteran French actress Julie Christie for her role in the drama Away from Her. British film Atonement scooped best drama picture, but stars Keira Knightly and James McEvoy were denied their awards. (Daniel Day Lewis beat James to it for his role in There Will be Blood, while Johnny Depp won best actor in a musical or comedy for his role in Sweeny Todd.) And British actress and new mum Samantha Morton won a Globe for best supporting actress in a mini series or made for TV drama for her role in Longford.

Will the strike be over in time for next month's Oscars? We and a clutch of international designers are hoping so!

Valentino: The Last Emperor premiers at Venice Film Festival

A host of stars flew to Venice yesterday for last night's premier of 'Valentino. The Last Emperor' at the Venice film festival.

The documentary charts the life of Valentino, one of fashion's most iconic designers, through the last two years of his working life from 2005 until 2007 when he retired.

Director Matt Tyrnauer, a correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, shot over 250 hours of footage of Valentino and his long time business partner and companion Giancarlo Giammetti to craft a film that looks not only at the end of Valentino's career, but his talent as a designer, his relationship with Giametti and the fashion industry as a whole.

Friends and fans a like, including Diane Kruger (pictured), Charlize Theron, Claire Danes, Elizabeth Hurley and Eva Herzagovina joined Valentino and Giametti on the red carpet for the premier last night. Click here now to see what they wore.
