WHY I WORE IT
The Michael Kors coat needs no explanation, but tuxedo trousers? During the day, you say? Let me tell you, a well-cut trouser is the mainstay of a working wardrobe and if you work in fashion, you can add a braver twist and try a satin tux, like the navy pair with a black side stripe that I wore today (from Marks & Spencer).
If I went on to say that they were ideal to go ‘from day to night’, you have my permission to take me into the fashion cupboard and shoot me because that phrase is banned at ELLE.
Stefano Gabbana once told me that a woman should have two wardrobes, one for day and one for evening. ‘You cannot combine the two, they are very different ways of dressing; sexy and then later sexier,’ he said. I think he is more or less right, don’t you?
So I wore the tux trousers for Monday because they were different from a safer classic Capri-style trouser, a more trend-led choice perhaps? What do you think?

WHAT HAPPENED ON DAY ONE?
Apart from exceeding my two-coffees-a-day limit, my first day back in my sunny Soho office after maternity leave was quiet. Two update meetings and a few quick hellos, plus there were flowers, cards and some lovely Twitter messages.
And I didn’t phone home once.
We set up an ELLE Pinterest account that you may like, but you tell me what you want us to pin on it.
We also talked about our cover shoot, which is happening on Sunday with a vibrant young Hollywood star. She has been popular on ELLE covers, but we can tell you more next week when wewill share mood boards for the shoot with you.
I enjoyed being back at ELLE today. I am planning some changes, so watch this space and we can do them together. I liked it so much, I may come back in tomorrow.
