When people ask me what I wear to work they assume I’ll reel off a list of designer names, and that my wardrobe is packed with luxury brands worth thousands. While I do spend a reasonable amount on clothes (it’s my job!), I also know the value of wearing things that fit well, are easy to put on and make me feel good.

Many years ago, I bought a New Look dress when I popped out for 10 minutes of fresh air at work. It was £32. I have probably worn that dress through more summers than anything else in my wardrobe – it’s travelled from Tenerife to the Cayman Islands via Cornwall. Price per wear, it was the best buy ever.

I also have a full-length dress that has lived a similar life, so my point is an outfit that fits well and that you wear with ease is priceless. I feel like this about today’s outfit: Zara pyjama trousers with my tried and trusted rollneck (have I mentioned that you should pay as much as you can afford for knitwear that lasts?) and a classic pair of beige Jimmy Choos. Job done, as a friend of mine says.

(Jacket by J. W. Anderson)

It's the softest texture and the softest colour. This jacket has so much detail.

(Clutch by Margiela)

I have been invited to see the Romeo and Juliet ballet at the Royal Opera House by Audi. This purse is perfect for tickets, lippy and sunnies.

(Brooch by Jordan Askill)

This silver bird brooch by Jordan Askill is one of the very few brooches I may wear. You are either a brooch girl or not.

And this is Graham (without an 'e') who we rescued from the ELLE Deco offices. He didn't fit in with their interiors scheme but we felt he added something, well, pink to ELLE
