We saw the pyjama outfit at Stella McCartney, J W Anderson and Richard Nicoll and, while it looked amazing on Natalia Vodianova, I wasn’t convinced it would work in reality. But against all odds it does. And what’s more, it’s a joy to wear.
This Carin Wester at Urban Outfitters version (top, £130, and trousers, £140; an all-in-one was a step too far for me) was so easy to take me through the day, even though I had twice rejected it as a work outfit while getting dressed. Sometimes you have to step out of your clothes comfort zone and avoid getting into a fashion rut.
Before I came back to work after 10 months on maternity leave, I had a wardrobe spring clean and filled two suitcases full of clothes I knew I would never wear again. Everything was black, grey or navy blue – a comfort-zone uniform if ever I saw one. I kept some lovely, dark prints that Erdem had persuaded me to wear and some Diane von Furstenberg, because every woman should have a DVF fail-safe dress, but everything else went. It was cathartic and strangely liberating. I vowed to take on new fashion frontiers and this blue floral outfit is part of my new mood.
You do have to be careful with an obvious trend like this though – four other members of Team ELLE came to work in similar Zara PJ trousers. If I was Anna Wintour, I would have made them go home and change! Snakeskin shoes work better with this look than almost anything else in my opinion.
But the big question is, would I attend an external meeting in this outfit and the answer is no. I would go for cocktails, possibly even tea at a nice hotel, and definitely a summer wedding party, but I wouldn’t present a budget meeting wearing it.
(Velvet Love perfume and note from the designers Domenico and Stefano at Dolce & Gabbana)
How lovely is it to get a personal note from a designer with a new product? Not everyone does it, but they should – it makes an editor feel special!
My mantra is eat what you want when you want. I probably drink too much coffee and eat too many apples. Though I cannot be trusted at the Krispy Kreme counter.
White sunglasses frighten me, but I like having them around! There are some great choices at Tom Ford.
