How would you describe your style?
Impulsive, eclectic and very English. Something old, something new, something borrowed. Its a mishmash really. I dress depending on my mood in the moment. Scruffy tomboy one day, fairy-tale glamour another. I used to be more girly, now I'm veering towards the classics. I covet effortless Parisienne tailored chic but I'm a London girl at heart and I'll always love a vintage frock, a boyish blazer and a big old pair of boots....Modern bohemian?
What is there too much of in your wardrobe?
White vests - An obsession. boyish, racer back, thermal, oversized, cropped, ribbed, button-down, sporty. I wear them under my shirt and sweater and dungarees, or just with bikini bottoms. I can't get enough of them. Whilst my friends were scooping up pretty dresses in a Mexican market I could be found rummaging through a weird kind of school uniform surplus stall for surprisingly soft and perfectly cut boys' vests.
What are your go-to labels?
Chanel
for dream dresses, Christopher Kane
for sharp white shirts, neon tees and shiny miniskirts, Radley for chic everyday bags (I don't travel quite as light as I'd like..) , Stella McCartney for perfect jeans and jackets, and Charlotte Olympia for shoes.
What's the most treasured possession in your wardrobe?
My 'snowy muzz' diamond ring by Solange Azagury Partridge given to me by my boyfriend when I was pregnant with our son. And a mood-altering little black jacket by Chanel that I'll always treasure and will give to my daughter one day.
Do you plan your outfits or throw on whatever's to hand?
Haphazard and last-minute with good intentions to plan ahead (never happens). My only concession to outfit-organisation is to at last have an emergency stash of decent tights (Wolford and Tabio) and appropriate underwear (Bodas for basics, Stella McCartney for best). For a special event like the BAFTAs I'll think ahead, but that's an unusual Cinderella-kind- of -night.
What are you happiest wearing?
Chanel no 19 , a favourite old pair of Levis, and a Bella Freud sweater (FETISH and DREAM are current Bella favourites). My Turnbull and Asser stripy pyjamas, or just barefoot in a bikini. My current favourite is a navy blue '50s starlet number by CHUCS.
What's your sartorial guilty pleasure?
A beloved - if threadbare - pair of trackie bottoms by APC
that I wear with my Converse and a Stella hoodie to walk my dog Frankie. And that's probably the day I'll run into an ex, or my most glamorous friend.
Whose wardrobe would you love to steal?
Sofia Coppola's, she has a modern elegance. Pure and simple, plus attitude, plus talent.
How do you organise your wardrobe?
Occasional blitzes involving multiple trips to Oxfam followed by an immediate descent into familiar chaos. A bit like starting a new diary in my best handwriting before scribbling all over it in neon zigzags. I tend to have a few favourite things of the moment hanging on the back of my bathroom door .A little white dress I found in the market for £20 (very Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby), a Stella midi-skirt in deckchair stripes, and a Christopher Kane hot pink tee-shirt.
Where do you look for inspiration if you don't know what to wear?
All over the place. I look to art, movies, music, pretty strangers on the street, Paris cafes, Roman holidays, my girlfriends, photo archives, the deepest darkest corners of my wardrobe....most of my fashion fantasies seem to lead to the sixties or seventies. I look to Lauren Hutton, Julie Christie, Jean Shrimpton, Catherine Deneuve.I've got a thing about a man's shirt and a pair of pale pink braces at the moment. I blame 'Woody Allen, The Documentary' and all those glorious Diane Keaton New York moments.
Have you ever had a stylist and, if so, what are the best tips they've ever given you?
I've never had a personal stylist but I’ve worked with an incredible amount of talented stylists on shoots through the years. I most recently worked with Katie Hillier who styled the Radley campaign. I’ve known and adored Katie for years so it was a real treat to have the chance to work together. She has even more stripy tees than me ,and instinctively knows how to make a girl feel good. Although she's one of the most in-demand and hardworking designers and stylists around today, a day spent with her feels more like a road-trip adventure than real work.
If there is one label we should watch out for in 2012 what should it be?
Sister by Sibling [who are showing at LFW
]. I love their leopard print knits and Sibling menswear is definitely worth 'borrowing' from the boys. Another new(ish) favourite is James Long who made my favourite jumper ever, long enough to (occasionally) be worn as a dress. A loose crochet-knit, neon rainbow striped treasure. And, I loved his glitzy sequin-embellished dresses for spring 12.
Laura Bailey is the Brand Ambassador for Radley and the face of the brand's spring 12 campaign.
