There was a knock on the door, and as soon as I saw the guy come into our hotel room with a bottle of champagne, my heart skipped a beat and I knew something was up.
We were staying in the heavenly Hotel Secreto on Isla Mujeres in Mexico, and we’d just spent a week partying at a festival nearby with our friends before taking off for a rare escape alone. Kieran had been carrying the ring around in a sock for the whole previous week, and had spent the whole festival terrified about it and darting back to the hotel twice a day to check it was ok.
He’d chosen a 1930’s emerald and diamond ring from a jeweller’s on Hatton Garden, and I don’t know how he did it but he got it so right. An emerald because I’m Irish, and an antique because he knows I love a good story. So now we are planning a wedding. It’s three months after the proposal and we’ve made some progress, with a date in the diary (December 29th) and a venue booked (Slane Castle in Ireland). And with the big things sorted (ring, check, date, check, fairytale castle, check), I can start getting carried away with all the fun stuff...
