Stanley Safari Lodge, Zambia

With a location just 15 minutes away from one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World – the mighty Victoria Falls – Stanley Safari Lodge already has plenty going for it in the 'plus' column. And that’s before you throw into the mix a handful of impeccably designed open suites and cottages that look out onto incredible rolling views of Zambia, the huge spray of the falls and across to Zimbabwe. And the real highlight of a stay? Sitting in the infinity pool in the lodge’s fragrant, candle-lit gardens, glass of champagne in hand, as the African sun sinks low over the Zambezi Valley.

Serengeti Migration Camp, Tanzania

In true safari style, the Serengeti Migration Camp brings the African outdoors, indoors, with its huge canvas tents. Cast out any thoughts of ordinary tents, however: these come with polished wooden floorboards, huge leather Chesterfield armchairs, sink-into beds and crisp linens. All of which are perfectly placed in the Serengeti’s National Park – one of the best wildlife-spotting areas on the planet – on the path of the famous wildebeest migration. Budding David Attenboroughs and photography enthusiasts, this is the place for you.

South Luangwa Safari House, Zambia

Don’t be fooled into thinking this is any ordinary African safari lodge: the Luangwa Safari House is packing some serious design credentials. Created by the world-renowned Neil Rocher, it combines ground-breaking design with entirely natural materials to create a unique, and really rather grand, place to stay. Standing on the very edge of a seasonal lagoon against a backdrop of the Chindeni Hills, you can float around the infinity pool and watch herds of elephant, giraffe and even the odd leopard drift by. Special.

The Manor at NgoroNgoro, Tanzania

A stay at The Manor at NgoroNgoro is like stepping back in time. The Dutch colonial-style manor house comes complete with butlers, Victorian-style bathtubs and delicious high teas served up on the decking, looking over the 1500 acres of coffee estate that surrounds it. Despite the elegance and grandeur of the Manor itself, it’s the NgoroNgoro Crater that’s the real draw, however. Often referred to as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, the extinct volcano is home to a unique ecosystem and thousands of species of wildlife.

Tarangire Treetops, Tanzania

Taking the idea of getting back to nature one step further, the rooms at Tarangire Treetops are high up on stilts under the wide canopies of the Marula trees. From this incredible vantage point the treetop hideaways offer some of the best views of the African plains. The rooms themselves are all crafted from timber, from the rustic beams to the oversized armchairs made from Zanzibari dhow boats, and centre around a main lodge in an 800-year-old Baobab tree.
