Hurst House on the Marsh, Laugharne

As the name suggests, Hurst House is on a marsh – or rather a wild, windswept stretch of Carmarthen coastline. Inside the Grade II-listed farmhouse, it’s all cosy wood-burning stoves and comfy sofas, rooms packed with a combination of quirkily stylish notes and indulgent touches, and a small spa and pool for sybaritic Saturday afternoons of unwinding before dinner.

Escape Boutique B&B, Llandudno

Llandudno isn't really the sort of place you’d expect to find a vintage-stuffed slice of boutique cool. But with the walls clad in vibrant, 70s-style print wallpaper and nifty design pieces from the likes of Conran and Robin Day, the interiors are utterly fabulous. The location is fun, too: an old-fashioned seaside resort, there’s a promenade and pier to explore, while wintry walks a deux along the beach are a must. And the all-important price tag? Rates start from a pretty reasonable £89 per night.

Allt-y-Bela, Usk

Allt-y-Bela is special. A wonderfully isolated-feeling medieval farmhouse (complete with Rapunzel-esque Renaissance tower), it’s a historic collection of wobbly, creaking floorboards, exposed beams and leaded casement windows. Perfect for acting out any latent Lady of the Manor fantasies you might have been harbouring, in other words.

Harbourmaster Hotel, Aberaeron

The appeal of the Harbourmaster is simple: one in a row of pastel coloured fisherman’s houses lining the Aberaeron quayside, it’s a picture-perfect romantic seaside retreat. The dozen or so rooms are breezy coastal cool in style with plenty of bright primary colours, while downstairs there’s an (excellent) restaurant and a bar with an open fire and views of the boats bobbing up and down out on the harbour.

The New White Lion, Llandovery

The New White Lion is an atmospheric old inn with a handful of invitingly cosy rooms, an antique-filled sitting room and a tiny restaurant. But lovely as the hotel is, it’s the surroundings that really wow. Walks – or in really wild weather, drives – along the winding country lanes of Carmarthenshire can be followed up by dinner in the hotel and an hour or two’s spent by the fire with the honesty bar for company. For city-dwellers, the hustle and bustle of urban life can feel like an awfully long away indeed...
