Five of the Best Luxe Spas on a Budget

By Susan Ward Davies

Thai Spa, Lough Erne Resort, Northern Ireland

Spa resorts – acres of space devoted to pampering and relaxation – are still relatively new to Northern Ireland, which makes Lough Erne even more attractive. If a waterside location in Co Fermanagh isn’t enough, try the stunning Thai Spa, which has eight treatment rooms, a thermal suite, light therapy sauna and indoor infinity pool. A Soul Revival ritual will ease you out of winter hibernation mode, as will the opulence of the accommodation in a choice of hotel rooms or private lodges.

Aveda Concept Spa, Mar Hall, Glasgow

Stately Mar Hall, which opened as a stylish 53-room hotel in 2004, has the only Aveda Concept spa in the UK. It’s also just 10 minutes’ cab ride from Glasgow airport, so you won’t become stressed-out just getting there. Holistic treatments use Aveda’s signature oils and products in the 11 treatment rooms, which include a rasul mud chamber.

SenSpa, Careys Manor Hotel, Hampshire

Perhaps it’s the authentic Thai masseuses or the spa cafe’s fusion food, but there is something very zen about this New Forest spa. It has a choice of relaxation areas, hydrotherapy pool and crystal steam room, and uses its own SenSpa chemical-free products. It’s like being transported overseas – without the airfare. In fact, guests arriving by train instead of car (Brockenhurst is on the train line out of London Waterloo) receive a discount.

Titanic Spa, Huddersfield, Yorkshire

This eco-conscious destination spa opened near Huddersfield on the edge of the Pennines in 2006. There are 12 guest apartments (which sleep up to four) in the restored textile mill. Try the Titanic Heat Experience (including crystal steam bath, saunarium and ice room) and signature treatments such as Decléor wraps and Carita facials.
