Something For The Weekend 13-15th November
Words by Charlotte Cox
This week we’re eating for a great cause, drinking under railway arches and playing golf underground. We suggest you do likewise.
POP-UP: Birdies Crazy Golf
Crazy golf. As anyone who spent their childhood holidays desperately trying to putt a neon golf ball up a volcano knows, it is surely one of our nation's finest contributions to the sporting world. Only now it's hipper, more wacky (how we love a chance to use the word ‘wacky’) and – yes! – even involves booze, at this new subterranean pop-up at The Vaults in Waterloo. With a nine-hole course featuring loops, half-pipes and an elevated five-foot drop, you’ll need Tiger Woods-style skills to pull off a hole-in-one. And should that fail, you can always console yourself with a themed cocktail at the Caddy Shack clubhouse. Because crazy golf was never meant to be about being on par, y’know.
Until 20 Dec
The Vaults, Launcelot Street, Waterloo, SE1 7AD
FOOD: Le Bun at The Zetter
On paper, it possibly shouldn’t work. Linguistically, it probably isn’t accurate (we’re guessing ‘Le Bun’ isn’t authentic French vocab). But believe us when we tell you that this duo of chefs take classic French dishes, give them an American street-food spin, and the results are MAGNIFIQUE. And for the next five weeks, they’re transforming hip Clerkenwell bar The Zetter into a neon-filled French-American diner serving up delicious brioche buns filled with bourguignon and duck frites, plus exclusive dishes like Le Truffle Double Double, involving brisket patties, truffled veal jam, truffle mayo and American cheese. And let’s face it, who needs authenticity when you’ve got brisket, truffle and chese?

ART: Modern Panic
The words 'provocative' and 'controversial' get thrown around a lot when it comes to art, but look them up and you'll see Modern Panic right there as the dictionary definition. Probably along with an image of Lucy Sparrow’s fuzzy felt sex toy models for illustrative purposes. And there's plenty more where that came from at this showcase of all that is surreal, uncompromising and near-the-knuckle, featuring more than 60 artists over two weekends. Expect illustrations by gonzo icon Ralph Steadman (known for his work with Hunter S Thompson and William S Burroughs), savage satire, performance art, and – above all – to be taken well and truly out of your comfort zone. But who wants to be there, anyway?

DRINK: Nights and Weekends
Now, we wouldn't usually advise that you go and hang out under railway arches at the weekend. That's because, unless you're a fan of curved brickwork, railway arches are pretty darned dull. But not so the ones beneath Peckham Rye station, which Little Bird Gin has transformed into a drinking, eating and performance space. More specifically, into two bars (one decadent vintage speakeasy, one relaxed downtown-style) serving up oodles of cocktails (heavily featuring gin, obvs) and high-end hotdogs from Gooddog. Throw in arty exhibitions, music and performances, and these particular railway arches are suddenly anything but dull. Nice curved brickwork, too...
Saturdays and Sundays from noon; free
Little Bird Gin, Unit 1, Dovedale Business Centre, 22a Blenheim Grove, SE15 4QN
FOOD: Perilla
There are many things that Scandinavians do better than anyone. State-subsidised childcare. Being tall. Flat-pack furniture. And, of course, restaurants, with Copenhagen's Noma being voted the world's best more times than it's polite to mention (OK: four). But the good news is, you can get a taste of the Scandi-goodness without having to, y'know, GO there. Because at this new foodie pop-up, ex-Noma chef Ben Marks brings all the brill bits of Copenhagen (pot-roast cauliflower in lardo with juiced walnuts, whole-baked mackerel with marinated cucumbers, baked custard with wild plums) right here to East Dulwich. Along with botanical gin cocktails by Hawksmoor’s Adam McGurk to boot. Because no matter how many talents the Scandinavians have, they'll never outdo us in the cocktail stakes.

FILM: Steve Jobs
Although we'd oft admired the achievements of the late Apple boss Steve Jobs, we'd never considered him a sex symbol. But then, as any regular ELLE reader will know, we have quite The Thing for Michael Fassbender. We didn't know power-crazed Scot Macbeth or comic-book baddie Magneto were sex symbols either; such is the power of the man. But we digress. Here, he takes the title role in this absorbing biopic of the tech visionary who brought us the Mac, the Cloud and put an 'i' in front of EVERYTHING. Smart, brilliantly acted and with a script from Aaron Sorkin, this film, much like Apple itself, manages to make technology really quite sexy after all.
FOOD: Syrian Supperclub
Eating for the greater good? This we can get on board with. And we suggest you do too, at a one-off supper club from boutique catering company Peardrop London. £40 buys you: three inventive Syrian-inspired courses fusing Middle Eastern flavours and seasonal British produce, plus a welcome cocktail. £40 helps buy two charitable initiatives: necessities to be passed directly on to refugees at Calais, plus funding to support the medical team at a field hospital in Aleppo, Syria. Sounds like an excellent deal to us.

NIGHTLIFE: XOYO Loves
Not strictly something for the weekend, this is actually something for all next week, and next weekend too. And WHAT a something: taste-making Shoreditch venue XOYO has curated seven consecutive parties, showcasing the acts, DJs and labels getting them excited. Which means that basically, it's what will be getting YOU excited over the coming months, too. Kicking on on Monday with Baauer and S-Type, the week sees sets from the likes of Virgil Abloh (Kanye's creative director, don't you know), electro duo Dopplereffekt and buzz label PC Music, plus a huge Friday night disco featuring Crazy P. As if that wasn't big enough, Saturday sees 2 Many DJs take the decks. Yes, we said 2 Many DJs! In short: ELLE loves XOYO Loves. And so will you.
