The Friday service will end a busy week at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly, so Bar Manager Graham Lloyd-Bennett and I will head to the Benares Bar, 12a Berkeley Square House, Berkeley Square, W1J 6BS, 020 7629 8886, benaresrestaurant.com/) for a few beers, followed by some great steak at Goodman (24-26 Maddox St, London W1S 1QH; .goodmanrestaurants.com). Good, solid, man-food!

On Saturday morning I am always up early with my girls to make sure they have a good breakfast. Our Saturday treat is always a freshly baked croissant for Alyssia (9) and pain-au-chocolat for Roseanna (6), from Cinnamon on Pitshanger Lane in Ealing (Cinnamon, 90 Pitshanger Lane, W5 1QX) who has a sweeter tooth. Then I will make what is becoming my weekly visit to the Cheddar Deli (108 Northfields Avenue, Ealing W13 9RT; cheddardeli.com) to see what new stock is in. It’s a great shop run by Brent Wilkinson, an old catering college friend of my wife Natasha’s, and what he doesn’t know about cheese isn’t worth knowing. As well as always having something new to try in the shop, he also runs regular tasting events, often working with other local suppliers such as wine and cider makers.

We’ll lunch at a new favourite, Blue Plate at The Outsider Tart (83 Chiswick High Road, W4; outsidertart.com/blue-plate). David Lesniak and David Muniz set up Outsider Tart in Chiswick after running a successful cake stall at Richmond Farmers’ Market, and they expanded into the store next door to offer a great range of American-style comfort food from all over the USA. They are famous for their home-style chili served with cornbread and it is definitely a favourite of mine. We usually go for the buttermilk pancakes, while Natasha usually tries ( and fails) to stay healthy and tucks into grits and eggs.

My weekend will end, as it begun, back in the kitchens at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly, 020 7292 5801 (.bafta.org/venue-hire/, Open to members only) as I have to start preparation for the London Restaurant Festival / EatFilm event londonrestaurantfestival.com/events/eat-film/ taking place on Monday, October 7. Film guru Jonathan Ross is hosting this event and has chosen to screen one of his favourite films, the animated Japanese classic, Spirited Away. I have created a three-course Japanese banquet , to match the film, including Aubergine Miso, Chakan, Grilled Shio Koji Devonshire chicken, slow cooked Old Spot pork belly kakuni, Loch Duart salmon temari, inspired by the film dishes include and it promises to be a wonderful evening.

London Restaurant Festival runs till October 21, 2013, Londonrestaurantfestival.com
