Be Tulum is on a lovely, unspoilt stretch of the Mexican Caribbean coast which is lined with incredible white-sand beaches, Mayan ruins and nature reserves. This boutique hotel is a stylish place attracting a stylish crowd, and yet it’s very down-to-earth, with the owner, Sebastian Sas, often hanging out with his guests in the evening, adding to its friendly and laid-back feel.
There are giant beds on the beach for sprawling in the sun, and upstairs the rooms are very spacious, and come with either their own balcony and Jacuzzi, or a ground-floor terrace. If the budget allows, it’s definitely worth splashing out on one of the two private penthouses with their own terrace pools.
The bar and restaurant are done in a beautiful simple design using local materials. The restaurant has a Mexican menu – lighter dishes for lunch, including quesadillas and salads, then more substantial dinners such as guacamole chicken or grilled beef with chimichuri. Stylish, relaxed and with a stunning location – Be Tulum is a perfect example of having the right concept for the right crowd in the right location.
What’s hot?
- The gorgeous location
- Stretching out on a bed on the sand for the afternoon
- iPod docks in every room
What’s not?
- It’s a shame there aren’t more rooms with the amazing beach and ocean view
- Surfers will be disappointed – despite the long bay, the water is very shallow, and not much surf builds up
