With a look that’s one part Hollywood glamour and one part Through the Looking Glass, with a dash of baroque twiddliness thrown in for good measure, Upton House is far from your average boutique hotel in Cornwall. It’s bold, consciously kitsch and very, very pink. Hotels, in short, don’t really get much girlier. Or as much fun.
Pink is far from the only colour in the Upton House palette. In the four rooms, purple also makes an appearance (mixed with gold in bold print wallpaper in the Loft Suite), Skullery is all monochrome skull-design toile walls and roll-top bath, and Snow Bubble is blinding white (with a vivid splash of fuchsia or two). All have a boudoir-ish, vaguely Coco de Mer-esque feel to them, but in a fun rather than a forced ‘rose petals on the bed’ sort of way, while the luxe-y bathrooms are made for romantic nights in with a significant other.
Away from the rooms, there’s an upstairs room where regular events are held (or 'soirees' as they rather grandly would have it) and a lovely little morning room where breakfast is served. It’s the owner Angelique herself who’s the star of the show, however. Not only is Upton House so obviously her personal vision, but she also fully embodies it and her toweringly-heeled, fishnet stockinged presence ensures that everything is always precisely how she (and you the guest) would want it to be.
What’s hot?
- The feeling of fun mixed with outright decadence
- The views from the bath from the Loft Suite
- The Penhaligon’s toiletries in the bathroom
- The warm welcome and generally rather glamorous presence of owner, Angelique
What’s not?
- Check-in is a bit late and check-out too early
