The slick-on-a-stick Hotel Pulitzer manages to be pretty cool without falling into the designed-to-death trap. It’s the kind of place where people hang out in the bar even when they aren’t staying in the hotel – which makes you feel pretty smug when you descend from your room at the beginning of a night out.

The rooms aren’t huge, but they have very comfortable beds, teak floors, bold lamps and original artworks. The five superior rooms are larger, with leather sofas. Most of the stylish dark marble bathrooms have baths as well as showers. The his ’n’ hers amenity packs contain good-quality products – and the lip gloss is a welcome extra. There are robes and slippers, too, which is pretty unusual for a Spanish 4-star hotel.

The combination of great location and trendy atmosphere makes the lobby bar, with its white leather sofas and Asian décor, a good place to meet for a night out, perhaps kicking off with the Pulitzer cocktail: vodka, cranberry, basil, strawberries and pepper.

In warmer weather – at least half the year – the scene moves upstairs to the roof terrace, which is so invitingly hip you might find the weekend has slipped by and you haven’t moved from the hotel. That would be a shame, however, as you’ve got Gaudi buildings, the Ramblas, hundreds of shops and tons of bars and restaurants within a 10-minute radius.
