Just off the southeast coast of Africa, surrounded by the warm clear palm –shaded waters of the Indian Ocean, the peaceful island of Mauritius is unexpectedly lush and steeped in rich, varied history. The island’s colourful culture is evident at Lux* Le Morne. Light hearted and a lot of fun, the name Lux comes from the Latin word light, and that’s what Lux’s concept is all about; lighter, brighter living (and a whole lot of heavenly pampering in between).
You don’t need to worry about bagging a sea- facing view here; all 149 rooms and suites look out over the ocean. Rich wooden floors have been polished to perfection (by hand with coconuts) and beds are handmade and covered in linens that have been scented with especially made essential oils. Everything is very well thought out from the tiny reading lamps by the beds, to the boat-like paddles on the large wooden fans.
Bathing-wise, there’s an indoor shower, an outdoor shower that’s been cut from rock and looks up at the majestic Le Morne Mountain, or the enormous enamel , freestanding bath that’s perfect for wallowing in. Spacious marble surfaces are covered in some of the most delicious products, packaged in white, with neon graphics, the combinations of fragrance (from Indian Ocean peppermint to citronella and ginger) will leave you hot -footing it to the shop to stock up before you leave.
Beach bums can flop on giant cushions on the beach or head to the blissful eight-room spa and the more energetic can make the most of the complimentary watersports from pedal boating, kayaking, sailing, snorkeling with exotic fish, heading out on a glass bottom boat and waterskiing down at the beach hut.
It’s the constant surprises that make this hotel stand out a mile, from the pop-up screen on the beach cinema (complete with popcorn), to the secret bar, the retro candy striped ice-cream stall, to the message in a bottle, which if found, might contain all sorts of treasure from free massage vouchers to complimentary beach dinners for two. There’s a pop-up Island Kitchen street food stall each Saturday serving tasty Creole dishes to try while you watch the traditional Sega dances on the beach by candlelight. Heaven? We think so
