While the all-black uniform on the 2018 Golden Globes red carpet was a powerful political statement, so too were many of the striking beauty looks worn by the A-list, with self-assured hair and make-up serving to speak up for feminism. Besides a sea of bold statement lipsticks, there were stand-out hairstyles and knowing nods to trends.

Here are some of our favourite looks – whether symbolic or not – that you may have missed.

What appeared to be a vintage-y faux bob from the front gave way to a power pony at the back on Jessica Biel. It was the work of celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel, who used Ghd tools to smooth and style her ponytail before accenting it with a black twine wrap.

2. Emma Stone's feminist make-up

While Emma Stone's playful make-up brought a pop of colour to her outfit, it symbolised more than that. 'I wanted the makeup to have a message as well,' Stone's make-up artist Rachel Goodwin told People. 'I thought, red lipstick was a colour suffragettes wore, so I did more research and found that they also wore very specific, symbolic sashes, pins, petticoats and all these things in purple, emerald green and white when they were fighting for the right to vote,' she added. Enter Stone's gorgeous emerald green and white eye shadow and violet-pink lips.

3. Kerry Washington's lilac liner

At first glance Kerry Washington went for a super-simple beauty look – with classic waves in her hair and a fresh face – but zoom in on her eyes and you'll see they're rimmed with lilac liner. Perhaps a nod to the suffragettes, purple being one of the symbolic colours of the fight for the female vote, or perhaps it's her take on the trend for 'ultra violet' – the colour of 2018, according to Pantone. Either way, it works.

4. Millie Bobby Brown's up-the-back braids

A tale of two halves; Millie Bobby Brown's super-sleek bun by stylist Blake Erik was made modern thanks to a trio of braids at the back, leading from the nape of her neck into the knot. This played perfectly with its minimal look from the front, plus her statement cat-eye liner and heavily cuffed ears, courtesy of jewellery brand Repossi.

5. Saoirse Ronan's silver threaded fishtail

'Saoirse's look was all about creating a beautiful structured up-do that celebrated both feminine and masculine details with the construction,' stylist Adir Abergel explained of the slicked-back style. Once again, the party was in the back, boasting a fishtail braid spun with silver threading. A head-turner if ever we've seen one.
