As we head into the festive season, there's one accessory that seems to be filling Instagram feeds more than any other: the humble headband. Whether velvet, sparkly or classic, the style is everywhere. Although they're not anything new to fashion (think everyone from Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot to Blair Waldorf), the accessory has undergone a modern revival from designers of late - just as we’ve also seen with scrunchies and hair clips.

The spring/summer 2019 collections varied from headband to headband, with Prada channeling all things retro, Dior staying minimal and Simone Rocha inspiring our Christmas party looks with the most statement of headwear.

Many influencers have tapped into the trend, and now recently, the royals - who prove that the accessory works for special occasions just as well as everyday. The Duchess of Cambridge donned a velvet Alice band for Remembrance Sunday, while Princess Eugenie wore a glittering headband tiara for her wedding this year.

Fancy giving it a go? Here are three ways to wear them:

Classic

Dior demonstrated that sometimes it's just as effective to put a classic twist on the latest trend. On the Paris catwalks this season, Maria Grazia Chiuri nodded to the world of ballet, by finishing her looks with delicate headbands that wouldn't look out of place in a rehearsal studio.

This style is great if you want to dip a toe in the trend; the clean minimalist feel of this take on the headband is so easy to style and will go with most outfits in your wardrobe, for many an occasion.

Pair with anything from a relaxed day time outfit like a T-shirt, jeans and statement boots or update your go-to winter ensemble and wear with a dress and jumper combination.

Volume

The volume of the headband is just as important as the material when it comes to this trend. Take inspiration from the Duchess of Cambridge’s Jane Taylor velvet headband with its dramatic height.

Shades of warm orange, teals and classic black look stylish in thicker bands and give your outfit an edge. A velvet finish also works well in this style; the perfect way to opt for something a little different this party season.
