We don't have enough hands to count the amount of times we've been backstage at a fashion week show where 'undone' and 'effortless' hair has been the 'do du jour.

Until now.

Yup, there's a new hairstyle in town and it's going to be big for AW18. Literally.

We're talking about the 'explosion' ponytail coined and created for Sadie Williams by backstage hair pro and all round nice guy, Syd Hayes.

'This season's look is all about the 1960s Brigitte Bardot style ponytail that's really, really, really big.'

Armed with a pair of Babyliss Pro crimpers, some Elnett hairspray (because it brushes out easily) and a custom printed leather hair cuff created as part of his Syd Pin collection (aka the ultimate luxe hair pin), Hayes back brushed 30 inch long hair extensions to create one seriously epic ponytail.

At Halpern, backstage legend and the Godfather of fashion week hair, Sam McKnight, opted for an equally ginormous ponytail that transcended the 60s, for a 1970s vicious disco 'do.

Mixing up curls, crimped sections and plaits to give super long hair extensions a multi-textured effect, the look was all business in the front, massive party in the back.

'She's been out all night and even though her hair is still slick and neat in the front, the back of it has all the evidence of the party,' said lead hairstylist Eamonn Hughes.

Do It Yourself

1. Pull your hair back into a super tight, slick ponytail with no parting. Secure with a hair band.

KEY PRODUCT: Hairspray is a must for a flyaway-free ponytail. We love Hair By Sam McKnight Modern Hairspray, £22.

2. If you've got a bit of time (and don't have a pair of crimpers to hand), braid the ponytail into multiple plaits and run hair straighteners over them. Undo the plaits for a crimped texture.

Alternatively, use a pair of crimpers to create the same texture all over (in arguably less time).

KEY PRODUCT: A spritz of heat protection spray never goes amiss when using heated tools. We love ghd Heat Protect Spray, £13.

3. Time to brush, brush, brush. Keep going to make the ponytail as fluffy and big as possible.

4. After you've brushed the hair out, it's time to brush it up and back to create even more texture.

KEY PRODUCT: Keep that crimped thatch texture in place all night long with a spritz of texture spray. We love Hair By Sam McKnight Easy Updo Texture Spray, £25.
