'Being cruelty free means that a brand has done everything they can to drive animal testing out of their supply chain by tracing their ingredients right back to the source. For approval by our Leaping Bunny Programme, that involves opening themselves up to audit, being transparent and committing to making a difference. Finished product testing is not allowed for Leaping Bunny brands anywhere in the world.''
'Our Leaping Bunny Programme is the gold standard for cruelty free products, with the most rigorous global criteria which extends over and above laws governing animal testing. It helps consumers make informed ethical choices in which cosmetics and household products they buy.'
Is animal testing banned in the UK in 2023?
'Animal testing has always been an issue of concern for consumers – in a poll conducted by YouGov in September 2021, 85% of respondents said that they find it unacceptable to test cosmetics ingredients on animals.
However, it has recently come into sharper focus in the UK because, sadly, in 2019 the UK government secretly abandoned the ban on animal testing for cosmetics which had been in place since 1998. This was only revealed during our Judicial Review of the government’s policy earlier this year, during which they admitted that they were once again issuing licences for animal testing.
The strength of public reaction to this news led to a denial from the Prime Minister, who insisted that the full ban remained in place, and then a statement from the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, in which she partially reintroduced the ban, but only for ingredients used solely in cosmetics. However, that accounts for only approximately 20% of all cosmetics ingredients – the remaining 80% remain open to animal testing.'
