Ok we can totally see now why Cara Delevingne was cast as a faerie in fantasy series Carnival Row. Because as we live and breathe, she did not look fully mortal on the Met Gala red carpet. She looked too magical, too ethereal, too perfectly beautiful. The only conclusion is that she is indeed part fairy and this new cropped shag hair – in the perfect misty grey – has exposed this truth.

Cara's take on grey couldn't be further from fellow Met 2023 attendee Cardi B's grey Barbie beehive. Instead of doll-like surrealism, Cara's gentle feathery crop made her look like she floated in on a dream, her eyes looking the exact same hue only exaggerated the effect.

Don't get us wrong, with accessories like her diamond cross and leather gloves, this was a fairy with an edge. An edge make-up artist Hung Vanggo perfectly captured and balanced with a smoked out silvery eye look toeing the exact same line of delicate and harsh, capturing the depths of both light and darkness. Bravo.

The hair transformation was created by Danielle Priano, assisted by Kelli Hoff and Anthony Perez, and was quickly revealed to be a wig. Danielle shared the process of tucking Cara's recently chopped blonde bob away, and in this clip her grey hair looks almost green momentarily, showing the tones within the wig that give it that mystical effect.

Grey was not the trend we expected to come out of the Met this year but if it's done like this... we're on board.
